“I was and I remained a scholar and a student”
Yannis Tsarouchis
The exhibition entitled “I was and I remained a scholar and a student” opens to the public from the 15th of January at the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation in Maroussi.
Eight subject areas have been selected for the exhibition, each exhibited separately:
Landscapes, Houses, Uniforms and Costumes, Portraits, Religious, Mythological, People with wings, Still Lives.
There were certain works that Tsarouchis painted from life; in imaginary landscapes, mythological and religious paintings, and sets, he incorporates features from those studies. Visitors, for example, see under “Landscapes” the painting “Sunrise in the port of Chios”, a life study, and next to it sets, such as Bacchae, and imaginary landscapes (“Youth sleeping by the sea”), where the skies are inspired by those in the above painting.
“Using costumes of the time of the myth rather than contemporary ones is a bad habit of the 19th and early 20th century. […] I wanted to paint religious and mythological subjects with contemporary figures and costumes, having met those people in my life, exactly as artists had always done before the 19th century, and due to my fixation with being archaeologically faithful to the historical accuracy of the myth”.
Yannis Tsarouchis Painting, comments, p. VII, no. 194
It is a significant achievement that the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, in collaboration with Agra publications, has managed to publish the Mathimata (Lessons) given by Yannis Tsarouchis in 1981 at the Ionian Centre, founded by Isidoros Kioleoglou in Chios. Thanks to Efrosyni Doxiadis’ hard work, patience and tenacity, she transcribed the Mathimata of Chios, and wrote the annotations with the help of philologist Achilleas Tzalas.
The current exhibition also includes works by Yannis Tsarouchis, many of which are used as illustrations in the book. He did significant research in Paris, and gave lessons to Lila de Nobili and other French artists wanting to learn about Byzantine painting; she collected these herself and donated them to the artist’s Foundation.
