The exhibition entitled \u201cI was and I remained a scholar and a student\u201d opens to the public from the 15th of January at the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation in Maroussi.<\/p>\n

Eight subject areas have been selected for the exhibition, each exhibited separately:<\/p>\n

Landscapes, Houses, Uniforms and Costumes, Portraits, Religious, Mythological, People with wings, Still Lives.<\/p>\n

There were certain works that Tsarouchis painted from life; in imaginary landscapes, mythological and religious paintings, and sets, he incorporates features from those studies. Visitors, for example, see under \u201cLandscapes\u201d the painting \u201cSunrise in the port of Chios\u201d, a life study, and next to it sets, such as Bacchae<\/em>, and imaginary landscapes (\u201cYouth sleeping by the sea\u201d), where the skies are inspired by those in the above painting.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing costumes of the time of the myth rather than contemporary ones is a bad habit of the 19th<\/sup> and early 20th<\/sup> century. [\u2026] I wanted to paint religious and mythological subjects with contemporary figures and costumes, having met those people in my life, exactly as artists had always done before the 19th<\/sup> century, and due to my fixation with being archaeologically faithful to the historical accuracy of the myth\u201d.<\/p>\n

It is a significant achievement that the Yannis Tsarouchis Foundation, in collaboration with Agra publications, has managed to publish the Mathimata<\/em> (Lessons) given by Yannis Tsarouchis in 1981 at the Ionian Centre, founded by Isidoros Kioleoglou in Chios. Thanks to Efrosyni Doxiadis\u2019 hard work, patience and tenacity, she transcribed the Mathimata<\/em> of Chios, and wrote the annotations with the help of philologist Achilleas Tzalas.<\/p>\n

The current exhibition also includes works by Yannis Tsarouchis, many of which are used as illustrations in the book. He did significant research in Paris, and gave lessons to Lila de Nobili and other French artists wanting to learn about Byzantine painting; she collected these herself and donated them to the artist\u2019s Foundation. <\/p>\n
